But what do you do when the box is blocked by a parade of confusing characters, your Boss keeps changing identities, and your whole career starts to feel absurd?" (Freshman Show) Iphigenia By Euripides; Adapted by Edna O'Brien Directed by Peter Wright October 8, 9, 14, 15, 16 at 7:30 October 10 at 2:00 Admission: $10 general; $5 students/seniorsKing Agamemnon must sacrifice that which he loves most, his daughter Iphigenia. The oracle has spoken. His promise to the goddess Artemis must be kept or the Greek army will be prevented from sailing for Troy to recapture the stolen Helen. The glory of a Trojan defeat, Greek honor itself demand the goddess be appeased. How will Iphigenia respond when she learns her father has summoned her not for marriage with Achilles, but for sacrificed death? Edna O’Brien’s unflinching adaption finishes Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis with the depth and merciless sensibility its great author would have wished.
The Good Woman of Setzuan by Bertolt Brecht Directed by Jeffrey Martin November 19, 20, December 2, 3, 4 at 7:30 November 21 at 2:00 Admission: $10 general; $5 students/seniors"No one can be good for long if goodness is not in demand.” —First god, in The Good Woman of Setzuan A comic satire of serious intent, the play is a fantasy morality tale with music set in a China of Brecht’s imagination. It asks how the abstract idea of goodness can survive the business of living in a world of economic necessity and social injustice. Does good require evil to survive? Three gods on a fact finding mission generously reward the hospitality of the prostitute, Shen Te, but require her to be good. Shen Te finds that no act of kindness goes unpunished and that she only survive by inventing Shui Ta, an imaginary cousin ruthless enough to defend her. Written in part in America while Brecht was on the run from Nazi Germany during World War II and first produced in Zurich in 1943, the play is a classic of the modern theatre. It is a key example of Brecht’s approach to theatre, a conscious presentational theatricality he called Epic theatre, which has had enormous impact on our idea of drama and how to perform it.
